La Dispute was always one of those pieces that I felt needed to be played at night. I had the plan/idea for this video for quite a long time, however, everytime I got to recording it, it never really felt right! This time though, it seemed perfect. I had just gotten my 35mm adaptor for my video camera, so I now could stick on photography lenses and get some sweet DOF. I took full advantage of this, and decided it would be perfect for the melodica shot. Then, when I started recording, I thought it would be cool to have the effect of me focusing in and out at the beginning, and the colour changing to black and white! I always try to do something different for each video to keep ya’ll interested! :P

Transcribing Yann Tiersen’s pieces, for the most part, isn’t so bad. Usually they are solo songs: on piano or accordion. However, the MAJORITY of Tiersen’s music is multi-instrumental masterpieces! Something noone has done (yet?) on YouTube is do full multi-instrumental covers of Tiersen’s music (at least I haven’t seen any yet). This has been one of my goals for a long time, since I know I can learn all the different pieces on the different instruments. However, the BIGGEST problem is figuring each of those individual parts out haha! Have to listen REALLLLLLY closely and try and focus on each part, and then figure out the notes from there! This piece was fairly easy to transcribe, but some of the other ones I’m working on – not so much! :P

I will have many more full covers coming soon – like Valse d’Amelie! Sheet music will be included as well…of course! :P

naruto cryingFINALLY!!! It is done! As soon as I found out that Smule, the company that made the Ocarina app for the iPhone, was holding a contest I knew I wanted to do a full ‘orchestral’ version of this song as an entry. Smule team decided that my video was worthy, and I was selected as one of the 10 Final winners to get $1000! :D

So, the repertoire includes my Electric piano, which does ‘strings’ sound as well. My classical guitar was used for the rhythm, and my Chinese pipa was used for the solo. iPhone was used for the ‘flute solo.’ ^_^

Just some background, this took me a LOT of takes to get right. I tried to match the timing as perfectly as I could, but I still notice in some parts its a tiny bit off, but meh, gotta let it go. Also, the pipa solo I’m not too happy with. It was 4 a.m. Friday night and I still hadn’t recorded the pipa and that was all that was left to do. So, I did three takes, and the third one is what you see in the final video (which is far from perfect, I made one big mistake towards the end haha, which makes me cringe sometimes :P hopefully you guys don’t notice it). After the third take I decided to do more, thinking I could get some without any mistakes, but since I was so tired it seemed to just go downhill from there, so I gave up on that and just went with the third take.
